Works surprisingly well for the price, set up is a breeze, manual is complete and easy to understand, and phone is easy to operate with all the many, many features; low learning curve, great sound quality and range. No interference even living in a downtown area with lots of businesses and a great deal of traffic very close. Handset works great and voice quality/sound and pickup are clear and sharp even in other rooms away from the base, and even with the room’s door shut and a tv or computer on within a few feet. Answering machine is a nice quality bonus that has a longer length allowed for messages than my old one and works great, too.

Not a very good Uniden phone - T. Casto - Kaiserslautern Germany
I’ve owned Uniden in the past and liked that phone a lot. This one on the other hand is terrible. The battery life is a joke. The reception for the first week was all static if you left the living room where the base was located. I wish I would have returned this phone right away! Big mistake in keeping it. I suppose you get what you pay for and recommend you spend the extra money and get a better model. Oh, and say you’re on the phone and your headset is about to die, you can’t just pick up a different one and use that one. You’ll have to re-call the person you were talking to. It’s doesn’t allow 2 phones to be on at once. And considering the battery life is terrible, this is a feature that is a must.

I am no expert on cordless phones, but I have owned my share of different brands over a 15 year period of time. I owned a vtech long ago and did not like the sound quality back then. This new phone sounds great and has a few cool features you should keep in mind: First, you can record your own ringtone from any sound source(my kids love that), but the playback ring is not as loud as I would want it. Second, you can communicate between handsets(I like that), and lastly, you can transfer calls from one handset to the other. All the other features are cosmetic and minor, but cool if you are into those things. I honestly don’t know what people expect from a phone of this price, sure the Panasonic phones are probably better for range, but I think most people don’t go too far from home with a cordless home phone. I’d say the best thing about the phone are the type of batteries it takes. I can’t see buying a cordless phone battery for o and having the thing not hold a charge because someone but it back on the base before its time. NiCad batteries are a thing of the past and this baby comes with AA Nickel Metal Hydride rechargeables that can be purchased anywhere and recharged many times and replaced with this most common format in batteries. Even the base has a recharger for spare batteries. Good Phone for a good price!

Overview
The i5866 from VTech is a 5.8 GHz cordless phone system with a number of handy extras, including an all-digital answering system, and multi-user expandability to eight handsets. The i5866 utilizes the 5.8 GHz frequency and digital spread spectrum technology to provide clear, accurate reception with less interference than traditional 2.4 GHz and 900 MHz phones. The answering machine stores up to 15 minutes of messages split among three mailboxes, while full remote operation allows you to check messages even while you are away from home.
Caller ID/call waiting compatible, the i5866 has a 50-number caller ID memory as well as a separate 50-name-and-number phone directory to help you keep track of important contacts. You can select among eight ring tones and 12 musical ringers, while the supplied audio patch cord allows you to record custom ring tones.
A speakerphone on the handset combines with headset compatibility to provide hands-free communication options. Handset-to-handset call transfer allows you to route incoming calls to any handset registered to the system, while three-way conferencing lets you communicate with multiple parties at once. An intercom feature provides a way to communicate between handset locations, and a global page/handset function lets you speak with all handsets at once.
Additional features include flash, redial (last 10 numbers), and hold. The NiMH battery provides up to eight hours of talk time or up to five days on standby, while a low-battery indicator lets you know when to return a handset to its charging cradle. A handset control allows you to adjust volume levels. The i5866 also comes backed with a one-year limited warranty.

Worked okay for about 8 mos. - Barb A. - Western PA
I recently had to replace this phone after approximately 8 mos. because it kept shutting off (one handset) the handset and kept giving a message “alternate handset in use”. I didn’t have an alternate handset; never did have one. Anyway, the phone was okay for the 8 mos. before that; the volume levels were better than most phones and the speakerphone worked well. I’ve used V-Tech phones for some years now and was always happy with them, but this model was disappointing to me. I also liked the idea of using AA batteries, which was a plus for me at first; however, the battery life (in my opinion anyway), could have been longer. I used rechargeable AA’s and would have to swap them out after about 3 1/2 to 4 hrs; that was a pain on a long distance call. I don’t think I would ever purchase this model again. I replaced this with a new Panasonic DECT 6.0 and I truly love that phone (see my review on that phone).
Poor Quality, Poor Performance - Cobblerswife - Sacramento, CA
I purchased this phone at Sam’s Club about 1 year ago for full retail price at the time. I hate it. The sound quality is really poor. It constantly tells me that I am using the wrong batteries even though they are the factory batteries that came with the unit. There is no option to turn the ringer off on the base - so if you select a personalized ring tone you hear the ring tone AND the base ringtone(which cannot be changed or turned off). The outgoing message for the answering machine cannot be turned off or muted either, so everytime we receive a call we all have to listen to my outgoing message, and it will slowly drive you nuts. The buttons are awkward and pretty cheap and cheesy. I’m going back to a motorola as soon as I can justify spending another 0+ bucks on a phone. Another downer, we’ve tried carrying the phone across the street when we are visiting our neighbors outside (maybe 40ft away) and there is no reception, 5.8GHzs my @%%. It’s a piece…
Good phones but poor quality - S. Kemp - Washington DC
I recently bought the i5866 DSS Expandable Cordless Phone with Digital Answering System and six handsets. I have a 5 level split level home with only one servicable phone jack. I also run a standard G Wireless Lan in the home. The router for the lan is in the basement and the phone is situated on the next floor up.
I don’t really know if the router was the cause of the problem but all but one of the phones (located on every level of the house) transmitted garbled speech. The sound coming in to the phones was fine, but no-one could understand what we were saying back. Also one of the phones would not recharge it’s batteries. I returned the lot.

It shows up CID right after the first ring, while the Panasonic does it after two rings. The Uniden 2080 does not show caller’s name even if the CID is already in the phone book, while my Uniden 1560-2 does! Panasonic is the worst, it scrolls the name and then the phone #; plus, as I just said, it takes one more ring to get CID. When you finally see the caller’s #, it is too late, the answering machine is activated.
Although I like the idea of normal AAA NiMH batteries, Panasonic stupidly force them to be charged in the stock charger only. If you put a pair of fully charged batteries into the Panasonic, it keeps saying (via voice) “charge it for 7 hours”, until you put the handset into the charger for a while. This defeats quite the point, you still cannot charge the batteries and swap them.
This Uniden uses a battery pack, but the battery chamber is huge (designed for AA). I bought an AAA battery holder from RadioShack and, after some modifications, put it into the handset. Now I can swap NiMH batteries and never have to put the handset back into the charger. Love it. You cannot do this with Uniden 2080 that has a very small battery chamber.
Sound is loud and clear. The Panasonic has annoying background noise. Oh, you’ll love the big transparent back-lit keys with superb tic arc feel and the letters are printed underneath - they won’t wear out. The rubber key bars on 2080 are garbage.
Some other features worth of mentioning: you can copy phone book entries from one handset to other handsets. You can inte’com or page any or all other handsets and transfer or conference a call. You can make calls private to other handsets. You can assign 8 personal rings for different callers. Voicemail indicator and button, pause button, mute button, speakerphone button and redial 5 numbers.
If you don’t need the answering machine, the Uniden 1560-2 sold for .99 from your local HomeDepot stores is a steal. If you need more than 2 handsets, you can buy two 1560-2. You can also use any DCX150, DCX200 and DCX300 handsets, but each cost . Although you can use 2080’s handsets on 1560, they still won’t show caller’s name that’s already in phone book. You can register a handset to multiple bases; so there is no problem to use two or more 1560-2 for a single line (i.e, extra bases are used as chargers only). If you like, you can use them like multi-line phones which are very expensive.
The only thing missing is headset jack, which I don’t care but may turn down some people. One other concern is durability. My 900MHz Uniden just died after a year of light use. That’s why I’m in this market and this time I looked at the Panasonic first.

Nice phones for good price - Reviewer -
Compared to other phones with the same characteristics, these phones have a very good price, but they do have a couple of problems.
I do get a bit of interference depending on how “far” I am from the base, which should be normal if I lived in a big house, but not in my case which is a medium sized apartment.
Another bad thing, compared to Panasonic for example, is that each phone is independent with it’s caller id and phonebook: if you add a phone number on one, you have to manually copy it to the other phone, or if you view missed calls on one phone’s caller id, they will remain on the other phone and you’ll have to erase them again.
The last problem worth mentioning is that the speakerphone sometimes dies. I haven’t figured out what really happens, but the sound sometimes just mutes, and after you move the phone it’ll sound again. I don’t think it’s a cable or something loose, because it happens with both phones.
Features are nice, answering device is nice.

I purchase one of these phones and I only got it to work once sive that time it get on searching for the based. None of he steps in the booklet work. this is an terrible buy

We bought this phone because we have moved into our detached garage during a major remodel of our home. We left the base plugged in in our house and have the extensions inside the garage, as well as inside our RV that is in the garage. The garage is about 50+ feet from the house, but we have a good signal and pretty good sound quality most of the time. It does sound a bit tinny inside the RV sometimes. The features are great and easy to use, including the phone book (although I wish it held more numbers), easy access to voicemail, and the speakerphone is very clear. We haven’t really had to test the battery life because the units are in their chargers the majority of the time. I would have made the three small selection buttons above the number keys white instead of black; they are small and difficult to see in low light. We have not used the answering machine feature yet because it is in the house, and we do have voicemail through our phone service provider. It is easy to access both through the handset. The Caller ID feature shows on all the handsets when we have missed a call and when there is a voicemail . The audio announcements of who is calling can be a bit comical due to pronunciation errors, but it does prevent having to go visually check the Caller ID for all those nuisance calls (which we still seem to get in spite of the “Do Not Call” list). I have not used the number blocking feature yet but plan to in the future. The phones work so well I wish I had replaced our old phones with this system a long time ago. As always in my experience with Amazon, ordering and shipping were smooth and fast.

The biggest problem is you can only list one number per name. We are use to listing the name and add four numbers per name ex.2cell numbers,home,business. The sound quality is not very good, I have a difficult time understanding the caller.
We were extremely upset when we ordered the phones and were given an option to apply for a Chase Amazon credit card and receive a .00 credit on our first bill. When we received the statment we did not have a credit of .00. I called to inquire why and they said that we were only approved for an “Amazon Store Card” and we did not get the credit. I ask why we were not notified and given the choice of cancelling the order and they said that they do not do that. We have excellent credit and needless to say we were very upset with Amazon. I have requested a return authorization to return the phones. Anyone that would do business this way is not someone that I trust. Amazon did offer us a credit of .00 on our next purchase but not this one. I am returning the phones for this reason.

I won’t spend a lot of time rehashing others reviews. There is more than enough information out there, most of it praising these excellent phones. I agree that there are far more pros than cons. However, even though I am giving this product 4 stars, there is 1 glaring complaint that I have to make. The rechargeable batteries on these phones stink! I owned the original Panasonic DECT with 3 handsets for about 2 years and the problem was that the chargers no longer recognized the phones, one by one they stopped charging. I cleaned the contacts with 91% alcohol, I removed and replaced the batteries a thousand times to reset the contacts. For a while, those tricks worked but eventually the phones just stopped charging and I left them on the charger permanently just to get 5-10 minutes of conversation out of them. 3 months ago, my Dad gave me a new Panasonic model with 4 handsets (newinbox) that he decided he was not going to use. I love these phones too (my 5 yr old twins love the talking caller ID).Guess what, the phones are already needing to be charged more frequently although I have seen no sign of the old problem where the charger refuses to recognize the fact that the phone is sitting in the cradle. Time will tell. Just a heads up and curious if anyone else encountered a similar problem.

You have to get into the menu and scroll etc.
All in all we like the phone(s) and feel it was
money well spent.

Panasonic Dect 6.0 Silver Cordless Phone with Answering Machine (KX-TG1031S) Review
I’ve had this phone for about a month now. Though I have used phones that were better (also significantly more expensive), the sound quality is very good on both the phone and the answering machine. The feature set is very good and the use of standard batteries is a great plus. Reviewing caller ID numbers is more cumbersome than most phones, but not difficult, once you get used to it. I have experienced the problem noted in other reviews with the volume dropping during a call just one time. The one thing that I have found annoying is that the answering machine does not adequately detect a no-message hangup. I continually get “messages” of the phone company telling me, “If you’d like to make a call,…” Overall, a good phone for the price.
